Love at the Top of the Dome
Nearly nine years ago, two young men were introduced in Washington. On the Sept. 14, 3 p.m. tour, Tim Hysom and Sean Jones got engaged at the top of the Capitol Dome.
“I first walked into the Capitol as a young staffer in 1993,” explains Hysom, the deputy district director for Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.). “And I have loved the Capitol building ever since. When I met Sean the first time, literally the first night I met Sean, I knew that I wanted to share my life with him.
“It was a great day,” he tells HOH. “It meant a lot to me to be able to do it there.” Especially because Schiff was also his accomplice — and the couple’s photographer.
“Adam took the camera and was going just a general, normal picture of us at the top of the dome,” Hysom says. “As soon as [Schiff] took that first picture, I was standing behind Sean and got down on one knee and had the ring and everything. Sean turned around and looked at me kind of quizzically, wondering what I was doing.
“It was the typical, awkward moment of him realizing what I was doing, that I was actually proposing marriage,” he says.
Jones said yes.
“We had a beautiful day on top of the Capitol Dome,” Schiff tells HOH. “I was proud to be there as photographer and friend. I only hope the pictures turned out well!”
