Staffs Debate Whether Tipton, Pace Need to Meet Again

Aides for Democratic challenger Sal Pace are so determined to shoehorn in at least one more debate with Colorado Republican Rep. Scott Tipton this weekend that they drew the incumbent a map of how to get there from a nearby fundraiser Tipton is slated to attend.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is expected to join Tipton Sunday night at a private reception in Durango, Colo. Pace spokesman James Dakin Owens urged Tipton to head on over to Fort Lewis College, the school both candidates graduated from — Tipton in 1978, Pace in 1999 — for a debate they’ve been angling for since the spring.

“The Pace campaign has offered to chip-in for gas if Congressman Tipton is able to make the ¼ mile detour,” Owens proposed in the campaign’s cheeky press release.

Tipton campaign manager Michael Fortney brushed aside the irreverent invitation, noting that the candidates have already duked it out in front of various local media and civic groups four times (Aug. 8, Sept. 8, Sept. 28 and Oct. 10) during the past two months.

Owens countered that none of the previous confrontations have reached this particular audience.

“While Durango is the third-largest city in the district, none of the debates have been there,” he told HOH. ”Sal thinks it’s important to speak directly to the people of Southwest Colorado, especially when Congressman Tipton lives right down the road.”
