Embattled Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is back at the Mayo Clinic for a “follow-up evaluation,” and a lawmaker friend said bluntly that it is unclear if the Illinois Democrat will return to Congress, according to press reports.

In an interview with Reuters, Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.) said that while there is a “strong possibility” Jackson would return, “if you had to bet on it, you’d probably want to stay out of it.” Davis and Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) met Monday with Jackson at his home in Washington. It was at that meeting, according to Davis, that Jackson informed his colleagues he would be returning to the Rochester, Minn., facility where he received treatment for bipolar disorder earlier this year.

“I think this rest at the Mayo Clinic may be just what the doctor ordered and may be just what he needs,” Davis told the news service. “But you can’t tell.”

Recent polling has shown Jackson with huge leads over his underfunded Republican opponent, Brian Woodworth. But the Illinois Democrat is also facing pressure over a federal investigation into whether he used campaign funds to redecorate his house, according to the Wall Street Journal.
