K Street Files: Energy Company Taps Romney Insider
Drew Maloney, a longtime lobbyist who most recently worked on the would-be transition team of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, has landed a top government affairs gig at the Hess Corp.
Maloney, who previously worked on the Hill as an aide to then-Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas, had been CEO of the lobby shop Ogilvy Government Relations. He departed this summer to work with the Republican National Committee and then headed to the Romney-Ryan transition team. Had the GOP ticket prevailed against President Barack Obama, Maloney, 43, was considered to be a shoo-in for a top Romney administration slot such as the head of the White House’s congressional liaison shop.
His title with the Romney Readiness Project was head of legislative affairs — a task that included identifying would-be administration picks for intergovernmental affairs appointees.
At Hess, a global energy company in the oil and natural gas business, Maloney will serve as vice president of government affairs and public policy. In that role, he will lead the company’s international, federal and state government relations.
“We have worked with Drew over the years in his role at Ogilvy and are pleased to have an executive with such extensive experience lead our government relations and public policy group,” John B. Hess, chairman and CEO of the company, said in a statement announcing the hire.
Maloney’s former firm, Ogilvy, has seen numerous departures since this summer when, in addition to Maloney, it also lost its top rainmaker in Wayne Berman, who went in-house with his client the Blackstone Group. Ogilvy’s current leadership has said the firm, which has made new hires in recent weeks, plans to carry on as a smaller boutique shop.
