Toasting ‘Rednecks & Turtlenecks’

It’s holiday party time, and the North Carolina and Georgia state societies are feting their commonalities with a “Rednecks & Turtlenecks” soiree predicated upon an embarrassment of tacky outfits and Southern charm.

The annual shindig is taking place Thursday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at 201 Bar (201 Massachusetts Ave. NE); $10 for society members, $15 for newcomers, with proceeds benefiting the Toys for Tots campaign.

“Come dressed in your best redneck/tacky sweater attire!” the GSS invitation commands. Per the online teaser, attendees (tragicomic attire or not) will be treated to hors d’oeuvres and an open bar pouring regionally inspired signature cocktails such as peach martinis for thirsty Georgians and Arnold Palmers for parched Carolinians.

A congressional aide who has thrown down with them before suggested the shindigs are a hoot. “I went last year, and it was a good time,” the partygoer assured HOH. “It’s always great to celebrate with fellow Georgians.”

Rep. Brad Miller, D-N.C., is scheduled to make an appearance. Staff suggested Sens. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., and Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., were not 100 percent committed but “could stop by.”

Tickets to the nontraditional Christmas gathering are still available.
