Harkin Remembers the Peanuts but Forgets the Football

At a news conference Wednesday, Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, made a hilarious analogy comparing Speaker John A. Boehner’s “plan B” fiscal cliff aversion proposal with one of the more familiar tropes from “Peanuts” — Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown.

Boehner’s proposal “sort of reminds me of that cartoon every year on ‘Peanuts’ … where Lucy … you know, pulls that thing away from him,” Harkin said.

That thing, sir? What thing do you mean? Votes?

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., and several very helpful reporters suggested the word Harkin was groping for was “football.”

They play football at Iowa and Iowa State, Schumer reminded Harkin. And, yes, Boehner is smarty-party Lucy in this analogy.
