Report: Mark Sanford to Run for House

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford plans to run in the special election for Rep. Tim Scott’s seat, CNN reports.

The Republican’s entrance into the race shakes up a field that could include his ex-wife, Jenny Sanford, among other candidates.

Scott’s seat will be vacant soon because Gov. Nikki R. Haley appointed the GOP congressman to the Senate following Sen. Jim DeMint’s announced plans to resign in January to join The Heritage Foundation.

A few days ago, Roll Call reported Sanford was “studying” a comeback bid in Scott’s district.

Sanford held the 1st District seat for three terms in the late 1990s. It’s solidly Republican territory and the winner of the GOP primary will likely represent the district in Congress.

Palmetto State law dictates the special primary must be scheduled on the 11th Tuesday following Scott’s resignation. If no candidate acquires more than half of the vote in the primary, there will be a run-off two weeks later.

There will be a special general election on the 18th Tuesday following the resignation.
