MONTREAL — Montrealers have a complicated relationship with their former Major League Baseball team, the Expos, which in 2005 moved to D.C. to become Washington’s now-beloved Nats. They miss their team dearly but also have a nostalgic feeling for the ‘spos that they’re not entirely comfortable with, as if they’re still hung up on a lover who jilted them.

That’s especially true when it comes to the gigantic Stade Olympique, the facility built for the 1976 Olympics that became the home of the Expos until their departure for D.C. It’s known as both “The Big O” and “The Big Owe” in Montreal because of its astronomical costs and upkeep, all billed to taxpayers.
