Former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land became the first well-known GOP candidate to enter the race to replace retiring Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., on Monday.

“Beginning today, I am putting together a campaign strategy and a policy team. I will be filing the appropriate paper work by July 1 to become a Republican primary candidate,” she wrote on Facebook. “Now is our chance to win. I eagerly look forward to speaking with you face-to-face about ways to launch our country to prosperity while defending our liberty and freedoms.”

Land will face an uphill climb to win in Michigan — a state that has increasingly voted for Democrats on the federal level in the past decade. Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call rates this race as Safe Democrat.

Other GOP contenders include Reps. Justin Amash and Mike Rogers. Rogers, the national GOP’s top choice, is expected to make a decision sometime this month. Land told the Detroit Free Press the she would run “regardless” of what Rogers decides to do.

The field has essentially cleared on the Democratic side for Rep. Gary Peters.
