Unstuck in Time: Nationals-Twins Sunday Game
The present-day Washington Nationals used a future version of themselves to defeat the past version of themselves, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at Nationals Park.
Or, in other words, the Washington Nationals used several players who as recently as a few days ago were in their minor league system — Anthony Rendon, Jeff Kobernus, Ian Krol, Chris Marrero and Xavier Cedeno — to defeat the Minnesota Twins, who were the first iteration of the Washington Senators before moving to the Twin Cities for the 1961 season.
A lot of reasons go into having all the young’uns up in the show — injuries to regular starters, ineffectiveness of previous starters and Sunday’s doubleheader, which allows teams to call up minor league reserves so no one gets worn out. But still, it was a little mind-bending if you thought about it hard enough, not unlike Billy Pilgrim becoming unstuck in time in Kurt Vonnegut’s classic “Slaughterhouse Five.”
