While no national GOP-aligned outside groups have spent so far in the race, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has definitively decided it won’t expend any resources on the Massachusetts Senate special election.

“The Chamber has not engaged in the MA senate race and does not have any plans to do so,” Chamber spokeswoman Blair Latoff Holmes said in an email to CQ Roll Call.

Gomez is being outraised and outspent considerably by Democratic Rep. Edward J. Markey and Democrat-aligned organizations. With two weeks to go, the absence of any outside spending on his behalf gives the impression that the special election isn’t as competitive as even two public polls released this week showing it a 7-point race.

The Chamber was a major player in the 2012 cycle, dropping $27.9 million in opposition of Democrats, according to the Sunlight Foundation.

In a CQ Roll Call story published last night, Republicans pushed back that the $1.25 million being spent combined by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Senate Majority PAC makes it clear that Democrats are nervous.

While it no doubt puts a dent in the party’s pocketbook, Democrats maintain it’s simply insurance money to leave no doubt that Gomez can’t ride a wave of momentum to victory like former Sen. Scott P. Brown, R-Mass., in 2010.
