Super PAC Targets McConnell #KYSEN
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is the target of a negative media campaign that will run from now until Election Day 2014, a Democrat-aligned super PAC announced on Thursday.
Senate Majority PAC and its nonprofit affiliate Patriot Majority USA launched a “major” statewide TV buy to kick off the effort against the Kentucky Republican, who is seeking a sixth term next year.
The ad features a video of McConnell stating that he’s “been on a government salary for 30 years,” a clip that’s played four times in the 30-second spot. In concert with TV, the groups’ campaign, “30 Years Is Too Long,” will include “radio media, digital advertisements, mail, telephones, email, social media, research and a web presence,” according to a release.
Along with the open seat in Georgia, the Kentucky Senate race features one of Democrats’ only pickup opportunities in the 2014 midterms. Of course, if Democrats want to defeat McConnell, they’ll need to find a candidate to take him on.
Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes still hasn’t announced her decision, though she sounded very much like a candidate in a speech earlier this month. Actress Ashley Judd and others have declined to run.
McConnell, cognizant of potential challenges from his left and right, has been preparing for re-election since at least last year. He had $8.6 million in the bank as of the end of March.
