Kerry: Syria Peace Depends on Chemical Weapons Control

The New York Times reports that “Starting a second day of talks on the Syria crisis, Secretary of State John Kerry had a three-way meeting Friday morning at the Palais de Nations here with his Russian counterpart, Sergey V. Lavrov, and Lakhdar Brahimi, the United Nations envoy on the Syria issue.”

“Mr. Kerry said at a joint news conference after the session that the three diplomats planned to convene again around Sept. 28 in New York to discuss plans for a peace conference that would try to bring an end to the civil war that has killed more than 100,000 Syrians.”

“But Mr. Kerry also cautioned that the prospects for a peace conference would depend heavily on whether the efforts to put Syria’s chemical weapons under international control and agree on a plan to eliminate them are successful.”
