Teens Confront Boehner About Immigration During Breakfast (Video)

Speaker John A. Boehner made quite a bit of immigration news Wednesday — some before he even had breakfast.

On Wednesday, while having his usual breakfast at Pete’s Diner on Capitol Hill, Boehner was confronted by two teenagers, Carmen Lima, 13, and Jennifer Martinez, 16, who pleaded with the Ohio Republican to do whatever is in his power to pass an immigration overhaul. The liberal activist group Change Nation posted a video of the exchange on YouTube.

“How would you feel if you had to tell your kids at the age of 10 that you were never coming home?” Lima asked Boehner.

“That wouldn’t be good,” Boehner responded.

“Huh?” Lima asks, seemingly not understanding what Boehner said.

“That wouldn’t be good,” Boehner said again, as he picked apart his toast.

“That’s what happened to me,” Lima told the Ohio Republican.

“I’m trying to find a way to get this thing done,” Boehner told the girls. “It’s, as you know, not easy. It’s not going to be an easy path forward, but I’ve made it clear since the day after the election that it’s time to get this done.”

Martinez said that she would “really, really appreciate it if you did whatever was in your power” to move an immigration overhaul forward.

“Alright. I agree with you,” Boehner said, pausing from peppering his breakfast. “Thank you.”

Later that morning, Boehner told reporters that House Republicans had no intention of conferencing with the Senate’s comprehensive immigration bill.

Boehner did, however, say the House remained committed to addressing immigration through the piece-by-piece approach he has long advocated.
