Walmart’s new H Street location will open its doors in a little more than two weeks, just in time to cash in on the holiday shopping season.

The new store located at 99 H St. NW, just blocks from the Capitol and Union Station, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8 a.m. on Dec. 4.

Inside the 74,000-square-foot store, shoppers will find a full grocery selection, including a bakery and deli, a full-service pharmacy, plus the wide range of low-priced merchandise that helped the multinational retail giant grow into a $469-billion brand.

The H Street store will employ approximately 300 people and is one of five Walmart branches set to open in the District (plans for a sixth store have stalled). According to a release from the company, Walmart has received more than 23,000 applications for the estimated 1,500 jobs at its new locations. Also opening Dec. 4 is a 103,000-square-foot store at 5929 Georgia Ave. NW.

The two new stores moved along quickly, after a living wage proposal made for a rocky entrance into the city.

The D.C. Council passed legislation in an effort to guarantee Walmart’s new employees would be paid at least $12.50 per hour. The retailer threatened to back out of its plans for D.C. if the Large Retailer Accountability Act became law.

Mayor Vincent Gray vetoed the bill in September, calling it a “job killer.”

A increase in the city’s $8.25 minimum wage is back on the table, but this one would apply across the board, not just to large retailers. The D.C. Council is currently considering some options, and Gray has expressed his support.
