Mr. and Mrs. Claus, a clown and D.C. United’s Talon will be in the Cannon Caucus Room Tuesday to celebrate Christmas.

The cast of characters will join Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton as she hosts 250 local kids for a three-hour party. The District Democrat is partnering with the United Planning Organization, a local agency focused on fighting poverty, for the 24th annual “D.C. Children’s Christmas Party on the Hill.”

While many of her House colleagues are back home for the holiday break, Norton will fill the third floor of the office building with festive decorations and plenty of presents. For the past 23 years, the party has provided some of the city’s most disadvantaged youth with toys, books and sports equipment, as well as warm clothes.

The children come from agencies and schools around District that serve low-income populations, including Children of Mine, Ketcham Elementary School in Anacostia, Parklands Community Center, the Spanish Education Development Center and Imagine Hope-Lamond Community School in Northeast D.C.

In addition to UPO and D.C. United, Toys for Tots, Amtrak and local public charity the LEAP Foundation DC, have donated and volunteered to help make the party a success.

“It is always a highlight of the year to welcome these children to Capitol Hill during the holiday season,” Norton said in a statement. “The visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and the toys and necessities, reflect the generosity that defines our community and encourages the kids that better times are on the horizon.”
