State Rep. Paul DeMarco, one of seven Republicans running for Alabama’s open 6th District, raised $484,000 in the first quarter, according to numbers provided first to CQ Roll Call.  

DeMarco’s haul brings his total in cash on hand to $650,000.  

DeMarco will face off with businessman Will Brooke , surgeon Chad Mathis, social conservative activist Gary Palmer and state Sen. Scott Beason, among other Republicans, in a June 3 primary. If no candidate receives at least a majority of the vote, the race kicks to a July 15 runoff.  

The other candidates have yet to release their first quarter reports, which cover the period between Jan. 1 and March 31. All reports are due to the Federal Election Commission by April 15.  

Alabama’s 6th District is one of the most moneyed House primaries on the map this cycle. Last quarter, almost every candidate in the contest reported raising at least $300,000 — an impressive amount for a non-incumbent candidate.  

The seat is open this cycle due to GOP Rep. Spencer Bachus’ retirement .  

Whomever emerges from the primary will be the heavy favorite in the general election in this deeply Republican seat, centered around Birmingham. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney carried the district by a 50-point margin in 2012, making this one of the most Republican districts in the country.
