Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay had a rocky relationship when they served together in House GOP leadership nearly two decades ago.  

But on the occasion of the 20-year anniversary of the historic 1994 elections that swept their party into power, the two former congressmen are getting the band back together.  

On Wednesday evening, they will reunite on Capitol Hill to participate in a panel discussion looking back on that cycle and the history of the Contract With America, the document of campaign promises that helped Republicans cruise to victory. Gingrich  and DeLay served as speaker and majority whip, respectively, in 1995, before embarking on other endeavors — for Gingrich, a run for president; for DeLay, a promotion to majority leader, a multi-year federal investigation and a stint on “Dancing with the Stars.”  

The ex-lawmakers aren’t meant to be the main attraction, however. Former GOP Reps. Zach Wamp of Tennessee and Sue Myrick of North Carolina, who were voted into office in the 1994 wave, will also serve on the panel, which will be moderated by Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., who got his start in the House as a result of that election.  

Other Republican members of the 1994 class, past and present, are also expected to attend.  

“This was a very close freshman class,” the event’s organizer, former Rep. Dave Weldon, R-Fla., said in a statement. “We came in on what the media described as a ‘bow wave’ in the election of ’94 and we gave ourselves 100 days to accomplish one of the most ambitious legislative reform packages of modern times.”
