Take Five: Rep. Mimi Walters
It’s time again for Take Five, when HOH talks with a member of Congress about topics relatively unrelated to legislative work.
This week Rep. Mimi Walters, R-Calif., talks about boogie boarding, heading to Mammoth and a few of her favorite things. Q. What’s your favorite activity to fill your free time in your district? A. I’m a mom of four kids. My last one just went off to college. My days have been pretty filled with my duties as a California state senator, so I don’t have the luxury of a lot of free time.
But, I am very conscientious about exercise. A way to answer that question is we have a lot of nice trails, I do a lot of jogging … In my free time I love to run, and I enjoy jogging through different trails through the district.
Q. Are you a surfer? A. I’m not a surfer; when I was very young I did learn to surf in San Onofre . I was very little. I tried it once.
But, I boogie board — I was a boogie boarder. Boogie boarding was really popular when I was growing up.
Q. Where do you vacation outside of the district? A. We spend a lot of time with our kids in Mammoth, skiing. Mammoth Mountain is a ski resort in California … and we’ve spent a lot of time skiing in Mammoth. [I’m a] skier. [My] kids [are] snowboarders, although we made them all learn how to snow-ski before we let them learn how to be snowboarders.
Q. Where are you going to be staying in Washington, D.C., and how are you going to make it feel more like home? A. I’ve rented an apartment down near the new stadium. That area, I don’t know what they call that area, but it’s near where they built the [Washington Nationals’] stadium … I’m moving a lot of furniture, I have a lot of extra furniture that I’m moving … so I’ll have my own furniture from California there.
Q. What’s your favorite movie? Why? A. My favorite movie would be “The Sound of Music” because … well, “Sound of Music” was a great movie and it brings back a lot of memories with my children when they were young because we used to watch it together.
I had four kids very close in age together, and that just was a great movie for me to sit and watch with them because when they were little, they loved to sing and dance.
