The National Republican Senatorial Committee raised $3.8 million in February, according to numbers provided first to CQ Roll Call.

The committee closed out last month with $4.3 million in cash on hand. It also began paying off its debt, which is down to $8 million from the $10 million it owed following the 2014 elections. The $3.8 million haul is more than the NRSC has raised in the February of an off year for the past three cycles, and it outpaced its January haul of $2.5 million.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which raised $4.5 million in January, had not released its February figures by press time. Monthly fundraising reports are due to the Federal Election Commission on Friday.

The NRSC is tasked with maintaining control of the Senate with a competitive map. Of the 34 incumbents up for re-election, 24 are Republicans and several are in highly competitive states.

Republicans will have just two serious offensive opportunities: Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado. Democrats need a net gain of five seats to secure the majority after losing nine in 2014.
