The implosion of Rick Perry’s presidential campaign is complete.  

The former Texas governor called it quits Friday, “suspending” his campaign for president in a speech at the Eagle Forum’s 44th annual Eagle Council conference in St. Louis, Mo. Perry interspersed his life story and his record and attacks on President Barack Obama’s policies with a warning to his fellow Republicans to resist “nativist” and base appeals that divide on race or creed or country of origin.  

He said his Christian faith demands we “love our neighbors as ourselves regardless of where they come from” and said appeals that target Latinos “betray” the teachings of Christ.  

That appeared to be an attack on Donald Trump, who has said many immigrants are rapists and criminals.  

Perry had struggled in the polls and had trouble raising money. But this is a year in which every elected official is polling in single digits, while outsiders Trump and Ben Carson have surged to the top.  

Perry said the federal government should get out of the business of education, health care and the environment.
