WednesDaze: Sake to Me
D.C. tastemakers Wednesday are turning Japanese, invading the Carnegie Library (801 K St. NW) for a grand sake tasting designed to whet one’s appetite for the 2016 National Cherry Blossom Festival.
Event organizers are flying in more than a dozen Japanese brewers to educate the attendees about the myriad craft beer, sake and shōchū offerings that are projected to flow like water.
Noteworthy pours include Dassai “23” Junmai Daiginjo, the premium sake served to Prime Minister Shinzō Abe this past spring during his visit to the White House, and Nanbu Bijin “Southern Beauty” Nama Nama, Tokubetsu Junmai, a seasonal selection that’s only produced once a year. Local restaurants KAZ Sushi Bistro (salmon with miso-cured mozzarella and shiso), Chaplin’s (beef pot stickers, chicken-shrimp dim sum and drunken pork dumplings) Asia Nine (grilled chicken skewers), Asia 54 (spicy tuna roll) and SEI (sake cured salmon) are all expected to provide complementary nibbles.
Tickets to the Far East-themed fundraiser start at $100 per person. General admission passes provide access from 7 to 9 p.m., while VIP arrangements ($150 pp) get you in the door an hour earlier and entitle guests to a swag bag.
Proceeds are earmarked to benefit the not-for-profit parent organization.
