A jury in Chicago returned a guilty verdict Wednesday in the case of a woman who aided the shooting killing of the grandson of Illinois Rep. Danny K. Davis.

Javon Wilson, grandson of the longtime Democrat, was 15 years old when he was shot and killed in 2016 in the midst of a spat with Dijae Banks, then 17, and Tariq Harris, then 16. A brawl broke out between the group over a pair of sneakers Banks sought to recover from Wilson.

Banks, now 20, was convicted of first-degree murder and three counts of home invasion for her role in the day’s events, the Chicago Tribune reported. The prosecution said that Banks trespassed into the home and gave Harris the gun he used to fire a single fatal shot. 

Harris was tried separately. Closing arguments in his case are scheduled for today.

Davis has expressed grief for all three people involved in the shooting.

“It’s my position that not just one was lost but three lives were lost at that moment,” Davis said in 2016. 

Last year Davis unveiled legislation to levy increased taxes on the sale of guns and ammunition and direct the revenue to gun violence prevention programs. He has stated in interviews that he believes reducing poverty can stem gun violence.
