Ed is a native of southern Illinois, where his mom and sister live in the historic Ohio River community of Shawneetown. He got his undergraduate degree at Trinity University in San Antonio and began his career in news as a researcher in the former Knight-Ridder Washington bureau. Ed returned to Illinois to earn his postgraduate degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Following a second stint at the Knight-Ridder bureau as an intern, he wrote for local newspapers in Pasadena, Calif. and Rochester, Minn. From there, Ed returned to Washington during the administration of George H.W. Bush. He was a writer and bureau chief for the Small Newspaper Group chain of Midwest dailies through 2008. Ed then moved to The Washington Times in 2009 as an energy reporter and has been the lead reporter with the independent spinoff Energy Guardian since 2010. Ed and his wife Mary live in Southwest Washington and spend their free time taking in the views of the Shenandoah Valley and the Rockies on their tandem touring bike.
