Mike Callahan, a two-time former Republican candidate for senate in Oregon, reportedly was on food stamps shortly after his divorce.During custody proceedings with his ex-wife in 2014, Callahan received assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, according to the Register-Guard. The filings in court did not say when he began receiving the assistance, but Callahan said he received it in 2014 “to provide food for my 2 young daughters and myself.”He also claimed “The amount of SNAP benefits I received after the primary election was very meager in comparison to others.”Many Republicans have criticized the food stamp program throughout the years.Callahan lost in a four-way senate primary in 2014. He said he was laid off during his 2014 campaign because his employer needed someone who could work full-time.Last year, he lost to Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., in the general election.
