Capitol Briefly Evacuated

The Capitol and the White House were both evacuated at approximately noon today, but an all-clear was issued and Congressional leaders were seen returning to the Captiol at 12:18 p.m.

Some staffers and members of the media reported delays returning to the Capitol after the all-clear was given.

At 12:28 p.m., an Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said the Customs Service had “intercepted or was intercepting” a small aircraft, a high-wing Cessna, which had violated the air defense identification zone around the Capitol.

The latest information the FAA had was that the plane was being tracked 17 miles west of the Capitol, leaving the restricted airspace.
