Stevens’ Endless Summer

It might not be how you picture the childhood of a Senator who represents the Last Frontier State. But long before Ted Stevens became the senior Senator from Alaska, he was enjoying the Strand in Manhattan Beach, Calif., where his family moved in 1938 (the year this photo was taken). A 14-year-old Stevens (center), who took up surfing shortly after moving to California from Indiana, is shown here holding his surfboard alongside buddies Pat LaPlant (left) and Marino Palmeras.
