McKinley’s Goodbye

William McKinley was shot Sept. 6, 1901, and died eight days later. He became the third president to be killed in office. On Sept. 17, following a funeral service in the East Room of the White House, McKinley’s body was escorted to the Capitol (above) for a memorial service in the Rotunda. After being honored in the Capitol, McKinley was taken by train to his burial site in Canton, Ohio. Ten additional presidents have lain in state, the first being Abraham Lincoln.
