Museums Plan Series of Free Talks, Screenings

February isn’t just a month for spending time with your Valentine — it’s also a time for arts lovers to warm up to their favorite D.C. museum with Cultural Tourism DC’s third annual winter arts promotion.

The monthlong program features 25 free activities, including gallery talks, film showings and lectures hosted by 19 participating organizations.

Warm Up to a Museum is an attempt to boost museum visitation during what is typically a slow month, said Courtney MacGregor, public relations associate at Cultural Tourism DC. February also is the perfect month for local residents to reclaim the museums while tourists are not here, she said.

Some of the activities being promoted include a Mardi Gras family day of activities at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, a performance of Italian music at the National Gallery of Art and a screening of the movie “Glory” at the National Museum of Health and Medicine.

The number of activities included in the event has decreased since last year’s Warm Up to a Museum promotion because of the additional requirements necessary for museums to enter, MacGregor said. This year, all participating museums must promote activities — not just ongoing exhibits — and everything must be free and open to the public.

Programming for Warm Up to a Museum will begin Feb. 1 and run through the end of the month. For more information, visit WarmUptoaMuseum.org.
