Rep. Tom Davis to Retire
Rep. Tom Davis (R) announced this afternoon that he will not seek an eighth term in Virginia’s 11th district.
“After much soul-searching and discussion with those closest to me, I have decided the time is right to take a sabbatical from public life,” Davis said in a statement. “I will serve out the remainder of my term, and plan to remain an active contributor to Republican causes, but will not run for office in 2008.”
Davis added that he is not closing the door on elected office, “but after 29 years in office, winning 11 elections, I think it is time for a respite.”
Davis’ departure adds to the growing list of House Republican retirements and makes his suburban Washington, D.C., district a prime pickup opportunity for Democrats heading into November’s election.
“I am confident we will keep this seat in Republican hands,” Davis said. “Voters in the 11th Congressional district will be looking for the most honest and optimistic candidate out there.”
