Maine: Sportsmen Give Nod to Summers in Winter

In the open-seat 1st district race, the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine has endorsed Charlie Summers, the 2004 Republican nominee who is currently serving in Iraq.

The candidate’s wife, Ruth Summers, accepted the SAM endorsement on his behalf. SAM is the largest sportsmen’s organization in the state, according to a news release.

“Charlie’s proven support of sportsmen as a state Senator and his commitment to preserving access to public lands is important for the conservation of wildlife resources in Maine,” she said.

Summers is one of two Republicans who have filed to run for the seat vacated by Rep. Tom Allen (D), who is running for Senate.

Businessman Dean Scontras is the other announced Republican candidate running in the southern Maine district, which leans Democratic.
