Going Green

While the fight for the presidential nomination could make the Democratic National Convention one of the most historic on record, party officials also are hoping it will be the most environmentally sustainable event of its kind. [IMGCAP(1)]

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) was in Denver on Monday to announce plans to award the state delegation that demonstrates the highest level of commitment to offsetting its carbon footprint with special seating on the floor of the Pepsi Center during the convention.

Known as the “Green Delegate Challenge,” the program also rewards delegates who individually offset the carbon footprint created by traveling to the convention. Delegates can track their footprint on the convention Web site, and those who offset their travel will receive a “green item” to wear at the convention. To participate, delegates must obtain and present their offsets before Aug. 1.

The convention committee plans to roll out several other green initiatives planned for the event in upcoming weeks.
