Small Fire Prompts Evacuation of House Page Dorm

A small electrical fire broke out near the laundry room of the House Page Dormitory just before 3 p.m. Monday, prompting the evacuation of the building.

The District of Columbia Fire Department responded to the blaze, clearing the dorm for re-entry at about 3:30 p.m., said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman for the Capitol Police department.

One Capitol Police officer on the scene suffered from smoke inhalation, Schneider said. That officer was transported to George Washington University Hospital for treatment, and there were no other injuries reported, Schneider added.

Officials from the Clerk’s office, which oversees the House pages, went to the scene to make sure everyone was accounted for, said Adam Holmes, the manager of operations for the Clerk. The Office of the Attending Physician also responded to the blaze.

The House Page Dorm is located just south of the Congressional campus.
