Roll Call Wins MDDC Awards

The Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association announced the winners of its 2007 Editorial Contest on Friday, and Roll Call took home three prizes.

Daniel Heim won not only first place for feature writing (non-daily, 10,000-20,000 circulation) but also “Best in Show” honors for the top feature story in any division. For his July 9, 2007, article “A Race for the Giants of History,” Heim went behind the scenes with the entertainers who play the big-headed presidents racing around the field at every Washington Nationals home game. He followed them through pre- and post-race activities and found out what it takes to win the nightly ritual.

Paul Singer won second place in the investigative reporting category for his June 25, 2007, article “Companies Follow Murtha’s Earmark Trail.” Singer’s on-the-scene reporting resulted in a fascinating look at how Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) has used earmarks to benefit businesses in his district.
