Florida: Martinez Sends County Workers Plea for Funds

Former Hialeah Mayor Raul Martinez (D), who’s hoping to take on Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R) in the fall, inadvertently sent thousands of political solicitations to county employees in South Florida last week.

“Please consider making a contribution today to the campaign. $50, $25, $10,” Martinez’s campaign wrote, according to an e-mail cited by The Miami Herald. “Any amount you can afford will help the campaign.”

The incumbent’s campaign cried foul, but a state official told the newspaper that “public employees’ e-mail addresses are certainly available to everyone.”

Still, Martinez’s campaign apologized for the e-mail snafu, which reportedly was sent to more than 20,000 government workers.

“We don’t want people receiving e-mail they find objectionable,” a Martinez campaign spokesman told the newspaper.
