Iowa: For Senate Bid, Eichhorn Lines Up Insider Support

Former state Rep. George Eichhorn (R) has launched his Senate campaign.

Although not the first Republican to announce for Senate this cycle, Eichhorn could end up as the Republican establishment’s choice to challenge Sen. Tom Harkin (D), who at this point looks headed toward re-election.

In announcing his bid, Eichhorn unveiled endorsements from more than 30 current and former state legislators, including Jeff Lamberti, a former Republican leader in the state Senate who lost his bid for the 3rd district in 2006.

Republicans Steve Rathje and Chris Reed, both businessmen, also are running for Senate this year.
