A poll released Wednesday by Larry Kissell’s (D) campaign shows the high school teacher leading Rep. Robin Hayes (R) 45 percent to 43 percent — though that lead is within the margin of error.

The Anzalone Liszt Research survey, conducted June 8-14, interviewed 600 likely general election voters in North Carolina’s 8th district and had a 4-point margin of error.

The poll also suggested that one-third of district voters are unhappy with Hayes’ job performance. Half of those surveyed approved of the job he is doing, “well below the crucial 2-to-1 ratio considered safe for incumbents,” according to the polling memo.

Hayes defeated Kissell in 2006 by 329 votes. This cycle, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has taken up Kissell’s cause, enrolling him into its “Red to Blue” fundraising and infrastructure program.
