Louisiana: Blue Dogs Howling for Cazayoux Cash Haul

Rep. Don Cazayoux (D), whose 6th district re-election chances took a hit last week because of a couple of surprising moves before the state’s Friday filing deadline, will be the beneficiary of a fundraiser hosted by several prominent Blue Dog Democrats on July 24.

The $500-per-head event is taking place just off Capitol Hill and will feature Reps. Mike Ross (Ark.) and Allen Boyd (Fla.), who serve as co-chairmen of the coalition of fiscally conservative Democrats. Several other Blue Dogs, including fellow Louisiana Rep. Charlie Melancon, are also on the host list for the event.

This spring, Cazayoux won a high- profile special election to fill the seat of resigned Rep. Richard Baker (R) by beating former state Rep. Woody Jenkins (R). He was endorsed by the Blue Dogs during that race.

In November, Cazayoux’s Republican opposition will be state Sen. Bill Cassidy, who will not face a challenge in the GOP primary after Jenkins decided last week not to run again. During the general election, Cazayoux will also have to fight off state Rep. Michael Jackson. Jackson is a Democrat who lost to Cazayoux in the Democratic special election primary but decided to file last week for the general election as a “no party” candidate.
