Henry Wise (Va.), an opponent of the Van Buren administration, is portrayed as a surgeon operating on Treasury Secretary Levi Woodbury. Congress investigated Woodbury in connection with an embezzlement scandal, though no wrongdoing was found on his part. The artist signed his pseudonym, “Artful Dodge.”
