Bush the Elder Gets Warm Welcome

Former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, were in the convention hall Tuesday to view a video tribute to the 41st president and what was described as his lifetime of service. His appearance coincided with his son’s, President Bush, scheduled to address the Republican convention by video. Echoing the night’s theme of service, Bush was described as “another who put country first.” Bush received wild applause during and after the video and entered the hall to chants of “41.” Earlier in the night one notable gaffe occurred in the otherwise tightly scripted convention event. As Jo Ann Davidson, co-chairwoman of the Republican National Committee and chairwoman of the Republican National Convention’s Committee on Arrangements, was making her introductory remarks, she accidentally referred to presumptive presidential nominee Sen. John McCain’s (Ariz.) vice presidential pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, as “Sarah Pawlenty.” It was a mixup that referenced Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who was rumored to be on the short list of vice presidential contenders.
