Campaign Finance Group Targets McConnell
In the final days before the election, Campaign Money Watch is funneling nearly $1 million into the Kentucky Senate race to try to highlight Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R) stance on campaign finance reform.
The organization is increasing its spending on top of the $385,000 that it already spent last week to take on McConnell positions, particularly on public financing of campaigns. This week, the group is spending $800,000 for television ads in seven media markets, including Louisville and Lexington.
Mitch McConnell has made a long career out of blocking and obstructing legislation in Washington, but he is known principally for his radical opposition to all campaign finance reform and his love of special interest fundraising, said the groups director, David Donnelly. Now hes telling Kentuckians that he has clout and power. Its fair to ask, as our ad does, who does he use the clout for?
While on the campaign trail, McConnell has been making the case for another term by touting his seniority and his powerful position on the Senate Appropriations Committee. McConnell has argued that if elected, his Democratic opponent, Bruce Lunsford, as a freshman, would not be able to bring home the same amount of federal funding that McConnell has driven back to the state.
As a counter, Republicans argued the campaign finance organization was simply trying to dupe voters before Election Day, and sought to tie it to the liberal-leaning group, MoveOn.org.
Perhaps nothing underscores the far left’s effort to deceive Kentuckians more than MoveOn running advertisements in Kentucky as a nonpartisan front group, said a source close to the McConnell campaign. The lack of disclosure is extremely troubling, and it appears that there is no depth Democrat advocates wont sink to mislead voters this election.
