Capito Wins Fifth Term

Despite the heavy involvement of beloved West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd (D) on behalf of her Democratic challenger, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R) appears set to win a fifth term in the Mountain State’s 2nd district.

Capito was facing a challenge from Anne Barth (D), who had served as a top aide for Byrd before she decided to jump into the Congressional contest just before the state’s filing deadline.

Despite his declining health, Byrd had appeared in television ads and at fundraisers for Barth but, in the end it wasn’t enough. With 73 percent reporting, CNN called the race with 56 percent for Capito to 44 percent for Barth.
