Cazayoux Ousted by Cassidy in Louisiana

Rep. Don Cazayoux’s (D-La.) term as a Member of Congress was short-lived. After winning the Baton-Rouge based 6th district in a special election this spring, Republicans have retaken the seat under state Sen. Bill Cassidy (R). With 75 percent of precincts reporting, state news outlets called the race for Cassidy, who had taken 54 percent to Cazayoux’s 37 percent. During his re-election battle, Cazayoux was undercut by state Rep. Michael Jackson (D), who ran as an Independent. Cazayoux, who is white, beat Jackson, who is black, in the Democratic special election primary this spring. After that race Jackson, who felt slighted by national party support for Cazayoux, filed as an Independent for the general election.
