Specter Ready for Matthews Challenge

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said Sunday that he is ready to take on anybody who goes after his seat in 2010, including cable TV host Chris Matthews. “I’m going to have an opponent. In fact, I’m going to have two opponents: one in the primary and in the general,” Specter said on CNN’s “Late Edition With Wolf Blitzer.” “I’ll be prepared whoever my opponents are.” Matthews, who hosts MSNBC’s “Hardball,” has not formally announced a bid for Specter’s seat. But the Philadelphia native has said he has always wanted to be a Senator. He also recently surveyed a select group of Pennsylvania Democrats about a potential 2010 bid. Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (N.J.), who also appeared on “Late Edition,” avoided saying whether he supported Matthews in a potential run against Specter. “We’ll see who decides to run. I haven’t seen any firm announcement by anyone,” Menendez said. He said he hasn’t spoken to Matthews or any of his representatives.
