Man Arrested Near Capitol With Weapons in SUV

Updated: 6:07 p.m.Capitol Police arrested a man Tuesday afternoon after finding two long guns, two handguns and a sword in his white sport utility vehicle.Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said an officer became suspicious after the man asked for directions near Pennsylvania Avenue and Third Street Northwest. The man has been identified as 49-year-old Timothy Whitfield of Long Beach, Calif.“With good reason, the officer’s suspicions were raised,— she said, though she declined to specify what the man said.The Capitol Police’s Hazardous Devices Unit swept the vehicle and found nothing hazardous, Schneider said. Whitfield was charged with carrying a pistol without a license, possession of unregistered ammunition and possession of an unregistered firearm.Police are still on the scene to process the man’s vehicle.
