It’s Official: Conway Launches Senate Bid

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway (D) announced his 2010 Senate bid via a newly launched campaign Web site and a YouTube video Thursday.

Conway’s entry into the race comes just one day after new polling numbers painted a dismal re-election picture for embattled Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.). The attorney general has been telegraphing his interest in the seat in recent weeks.

“I am running for the United States Senate because I believe our time is now,— Conway wrote on the Web site. “As I see the challenges facing our Commonwealth I believe it is time for Kentucky to have a new generation of leadership. Now is the time for bold ideas, a new vision and a belief that a brighter tomorrow is just over the horizon.—

However, Conway does not have a clear road to the Democratic nomination. Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo (D) announced in January that he would take a second shot at the Senate seat after narrowly losing to Bunning in 2004. Gov. Steve Beshear (D) announced his endorsement of Mongiardo in late March.
