Ensign Loses Another Top Aide

Embattled Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), who recently acknowledged an affair with a former staffer, is losing a second senior staffer with the departure of Communications Director Tory Mazzola, the Las Vegas Sun reported Thursday night.Mazzola is moving to the National Republican Congressional Committee.Mazzola is the second top Ensign aide to resign in as many days — Chief of Staff John Lopez left the office on Wednesday. Last month, Ensign admitted to an extramarital affair with Cynthia Hampton, a former campaign aide. He later acknowledged that his parents gave Hampton, her husband and their children $96,000 in gifts last year. Cynthia Hampton’s husband, Doug, used to be Ensign’s top aide.Immediately after Ensign publicly admitted to the relationship, an e-mail circulated to Senate offices asking for new placement for the Senator’s interns.Ensign has said he plans to remain in the Senate and run for re-election in 2012.
