HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Weighty Matters

Rep. Tom Perriello is facing tough crowds as he holds town hall meetings on health care in his district, but the Virginia Democrat admits he’s also confronting another difficult task: dropping some pesky extra pounds.

[IMGCAP(1)]At a town hall event in Charlotte Court House, Va., earlier this week, Perriello discussed how the obesity epidemic is hurting the nation’s health care system, according to an HOH spy.

More preventative care is needed, Perriello argued, which includes Americans taking better care of themselves. Perriello even admitted that some of his own constituents in central Virginia make unhealthy lifestyle choices — including himself.

Since taking office in January, Perriello has gained 10 pounds, he said. But he’s aiming to lose that weight by the time he returns to Capitol Hill, he added.

To do so, Perriello said he is making smarter choices when it comes to food, such as picking grilled chicken over hamburgers.

And while Perriello might face a tough time dropping the weight, he already has lost something: his voice. Speaking at so many town halls has affected the Congressman’s pipes, our spy says.

In Concert. Political fundraisers at the Gula Graham Group are scheduled to raise money for Rep. John Shimkus at Thursday night’s Keith Urban show at the Verizon Center.

The Illinois Republican will not appear at the country star’s concert, but will host a special breakfast in September to thank those who do attend, according to the invite, which is posted on the Sunlight Foundation’s Party Time blog.

The suggested ticket price is $1,000, according to the invitation.
