Hurt Raises Almost $300,000 in Race Against Perriello

Virginia state Sen. Robert Hurt (R), a leading candidate to take on Rep. Tom Perriello (D) this fall, raised $293,000 in the final two months of 2009, his campaign said Thursday.

Hurt initiated his campaign in early October but began soliciting donations in early November, after Virginia’s statewide and legislative elections. His campaign said he raised more than 80 percent of his funds from Virginia donors.

“I’m delighted to note that we exceeded our fundraising goals and appear to have raised more money from district residents than any other Republican in the race,— Hurt said in a statement. “Defeating Tom Perriello in November will not be easy, and it will take someone who can persuade hard-working folks from Danville to Charlottesville that this cause is worth their time and investment.—

The National Republican Congressional Committee has been promoting Hurt, who faces six opponents in the June 8 primary election. Laurence Verga (R), a real estate investor, reported earlier this month that he raised $288,000 through the end of 2009, most of which came in the form of personal loans or contributions from the candidate.
