Boxer Joins List of Democrats Opposed to Bernanke Confirmation

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) joined a growing contingent of liberal Democrats who will oppose Ben Bernanke’s nomination for a second term as head of the Federal Reserve, an alarming sign for the embattled nominee.

“It is time for a change,— Boxer announced in a release. “It is time for Main Street to have a champion at the Fed.—

Boxer added: “Dr. Bernanke played a lead role in crafting the Bush administration’s economic policies, which led to the current economic crisis. Our next Federal Reserve Chairman must represent a clean break from the failed policies of the past.—

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) reiterated his opposition Friday, and Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) also came out against Bernanke on Friday. Despite the growing chorus of dissent, President Barack Obama predicted the Senate will confirm the nominee.
